I don't think that it's necessarily true, but I expected something like that from a pesimistic and depressed guy like Ishmael. He kind of goes against what people are taught these days as they grow up; that if you strive for something, then you will eventually reach your dreams. Ishmael is saying the exact opposite; that if you strive for your goals, you won't ever reach it. You'll either give up or end up trapped and confused. I don't fully agree with this, because there have been many instances in which people acheive their dreams. However, I think that if you want to reach a certain goal for a bad reason (like for revenge in Ahab's case) then it won't be possible to gain. I really liked that quote that you found.
